A man in the ancient East discovers God through intense suffering.

Job eBook Ben Avery Jeff Slemons

Summary: When Satan strikes at God-fearing Job, this man of great sorrows tries to understand why God has allowed all this evil befall him.

Review: The book of Job is what theologians call "complex wisdom." There are no easy answers in this book. Just like there are no easy answers in life in the face of suffering.

Modern readers often find the biblical book difficult to access because it begins as a standard narrative, then shifts into a series of long discourses, before shifting again to standard narrative.

Ben Avery's script in this graphic novel, Job, is very true to the text. He follows the basic outline of the book in this hyper-faithful interpretation. There's plenty of artistic interpretation and imagination in this comic, though. Satan is seen in opening (and closing) scenes lurking in the background of the frames. The settings Avery chose to hold the discourses communicates the dire situation Job is in.

Jeff Slemons' artwork is awesome. His characters communicate a wide range of emotions that help the reader feel their pain. Likewise his action scenes are as powerful as they are imaginative. His scenes of the heavenly council show both the majesty of the sons of God, and Satan's out-of-place presence there. The accuser looks arrogant, while the angels look peaceful. Slemons drew in some wonderful subtleties into the comic the enhance the overall experience.

I think the real value of this comic is that it helps modern readers conceptualize what is happening in the biblical book. Ben Avery faithfully summarizes the discourses, which readers often get bogged down in.

Job is a faithful adaptation that translates an ancient text for contemporary audiences.

Readers young and old trying to understand the biblical book will find a wealth of helpful imagination in this comic. Likewise, those struggling with the "problem of evil" or personal tragedy will also find great wisdom in these pages.

Job eBook Ben Avery Jeff Slemons Reviews

*I received a digital copy of this book to review courtesy of Kingstone Media's PR department*

JOB is another admirable piece of work from Kingstone Media, and it is about as faithful as it could be in comic form. The writers frame the story as it occurs in the text, with Satan's challenge in heaven and Job's suffering on earth, the latter half of which is explored almost entirely of conversations.

Reading the story of Job in this format, I was amazed at how much a visual interpretation informed the dynamics. I've often felt the text of Job moves like a play, and this adaptation affirms that reading. In its faithfulness to the text, the comic commits to pacing and cadence not unlike an ongoing discussion, a choice which can be difficult to sustain. Ben Avery, Jeff Slemons, and others at Kingstone Media have done so, making for a fine take on the classic story.
This is the second time I have purchased this illustrated book of the Bible. The creators stayed true to the text and the illustrations were excellent.
Great Comic adaptation. Story is an inspiration to anyone going through life trials and tribulations. Highly recommend it to all.
Super awesome! If you've ever struggle with understanding the book of Job on the bible, this is for you.
I thought this graphic novel was a reminder of what God is truly capable of. It teaches us, mere mortals, to trust in God no matter what happens. To never stop trusting Him, even if you believe you've lost all Hope, He will never abandon you!
Story line gets close to what scripture describes. The conversation is understandabley abridged but that is to be expected. The art work and color is amazing specially when viewed on a hi definition device. This comic book is a good replacement for the run in the mill super hero comics out there that teaches immorality and gore. As concerning the story itself, it needs some expounding as to the question, "Why do the righteous suffer?" Highly recommended.
The artwork is amazing. We don't always realize how much of our lives is a struggle between God and Satan. God isn't a strict tyrant like Satan tries to say that He is. Satan is quite the trickster and deceiver. The artwork really reaches teenagers and very visual oriented people like me. I'm an adult but I grew up reading lots of comic books, especially during the summer. Brought back great memories for me.
