Nonnie, a recently divorced woman is out at a bar with friends celebrating her new life as a single woman when someone catches her eye. When she walks to the restroom she locks eyes on a classicly handsome man that she refers to as the Businessman. Although she has never seen him before there's something familiar about him.
"Who are you?" I asked, my voice a stunted whisper.
"You know who I am, and I know you. We knew the instant our eyes met," he said.
Walking out the restroom, she finds the Businessman waiting for her. He proceeds to grab her hand and lead her down the hallway where he uses his tie to bind her hands and their first sexual encounter occurs. After having sex with the stranger, Nonnie can't get the mysterious man out of her mind. She begins a quest to find him, especially since he left his tie with her. Nonnie & Businessman never exchange names or make plans to see each again with makes her search for him difficult.
Just when she was about to forget about the Businessman, he shows up in the same sex club she is at. More so, he is witnessing another man (Michael) touch what he already sampled. I love how intense the Businessman reaction is, how Nonnie's pleasure changed from delight to uncomfortable, and Michael's cavalier reaction to the situation. Interesting too is Michael's warning to Nonnie concerning the Businessman.
Because of Nonnie's naivety in BDSM both Michael & the Businessman make offers to teach/train her in this world. Each time she is with either man, she gets a glance of the world she's unsure if she belongs in. Some of the more forceful scenes made me cringe along with Nonnie. Although the book is engaging and keeps your interest from beginning to end I didn't like the lack of safe words. Despite not having a safe word, Nonnie learns from each man valuable lessons in this new erotic world she is venturing into.
I really enjoyed the mystery around the Businessman's name which is not revealed until near the end of the book, the ambiguity of the Businessman and Michael's relationship, and the predicament Nonnie finds herself in. Who will Nonnie choose, Michael or the Businessman?
The title I wrote really explains my dilemma with this story. It's really Not about the Businessman Nonnie meets. It's about the exploration of a BDSM lifestyle. And it didn't engage me.
I thought a lot about why I feel so "Meh" about Nonnie. I started out liking her, but I realized it was because I got to read about her recent experiences with her ex-husband. It gave me perspective, motive, a peek into her drive.
Then she meets The Businessman (great nickname) and the depth Ms. Ward had started to create into her character disappeared. She does some behaviors I found questionable because I wasn't given a sneak peek into her motivation.

Meeting Michael, Nonnie seeing Lilly's reaction to meeting him obviously again and not giving the reader enough of a reason why she'd ignore Lilly's apparent discomfort. And finally, her meeting with Elaine.
As author's, were aware of a contrivance known, informally, as the, "As you know, Bob..." device. It's often used by unsophisticated/new writers writers to explain something to the reader that for all intents and purposes, should have been either obvious or left for the reader to figure out themselves.
Meeting Elaine was a huge dose of the, "As you know, Bob..." as Elaine went into lengthy explanations of things the author obviously wanted us to know by telling us, rather than showing us.
And therein lies the rub. It's why I was so disengaged in the story. Ms. Ward has the potential of honing her skills and producing some quality work. For me, this fell short, emotionally, and motivationally.
This series has made it into my favorite top ranking series of all time!!! Holy guacamole it’s freaking HOT, well hot really is such a minor word, it’s mouthwatering, panty wetting, sexy as HELL goodness!!!
So you have precious Nonnie Crawford, a recent divorcee, who unfortunately put up with one man’s worthlessness for way to long. She is a revived woman that is ready to start a new chapter in her book of life. While out one night with her friend’s she meets The Businessman, a powerful dominate who gives Nonnie a small taste, in the hallway of a bar, into the world of Domination and Submission. After that small encounter she is hooked and seeks out to find The Businessman. This leads her to a BDSM club where she meets another strong Dominate, Michael Weston. He gives a little more taste, and then offers her a promise of 5 nights to explore her submission. In the meantime The Businessman also gives her an offer to explore, which offer will she choose first?
I am now reading Book 4 (The Submissive’s Last Word) and I can promise you that you will NOT be disappointed by any of these books. I cannot wait to get home tonight to finish up this series, but am also silently hating that it will be over. This will take you on a rollercoaster ride like no other, leaving you a bit breathless and a lot revved up!!!
