Fetal Alcohol Syndrome The Teen Years, is the sequel to Barbara Studham’s first memoir Two Decades Of Diapers. Her new memoir gives insight into how family life can be ruthlessly disrupted by behavior disorders caused by Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Barbara Studham spent twenty years raising grandchildren with FAS. Through her wealth of experience with the disorder, she leads us through her desperation, fears, hopes, and prayers while coping with her grandchildren’s teen years. However, Barbara would be the first to admit that while FAS brought a whirlwind of emotions into her life, her grandchildren's daily struggles with FAS far outweigh any trauma she has endured. Often labelled defiant, odious, caustic, and wayward, individuals with FAS are more victims of brain damage overwhelmed by the demands of everyday life, than the disposable people society deems them. If you are an individual considering adopting or fostering a child with FAS, a mental health worker, or someone who is interested in learning more about this distressing disorder, then Two Decades Of Diapers, and, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome The Teen Years are essential reading.

Very informative on this very important and relatively 'taboo' topic. Thank you Barbara Studham. Your book provided a lot of answers for me. Unfortunately, we don't live in an area where this kind of open discussion would benefit anyone. Still much stigma and judgment and the children suffer terribly. But for me, I appreciate at least knowing there is an answer to my questions.

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome The Teen Years Two Decades Of Diapers Book 2 edition by Barbara Studham Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews

Is your teenager forever getting into trouble at school or sometimes not even going? Is he hanging with friends you know aren't good company? Is your daughter freaking out, having melt-downs or screaming hissy fits over the smallest issues? Has your child always had learning difficulties, been diagnosed with ADHD and put on meds? And are you getting worn out trying to control a child who is forever out of control?

Perhaps the reason you're not getting suitable answers for your questions or non-medicating solutions to such behavioural problems from doctors and others who should know what to do is that these professionals aren't recognizing the full-blown signs of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome...and neither are you. In that case, both Barbara Studham's books on FASD should be required reading for medical and behavioural professionals, as well as parents like you. All the research done so far will not enlighten you as much as these first-hand accounts of raising four children with FASD from infants to teenagers.

In Barbara's first book, "Two Decades of Diapers" she covered how she gradually came to recognize that the behaviour she was dealing with in the four grandchildren she adopted, was actually the behaviour of children who were mentally challenged thanks to their birth mother drinking throughout her pregnancy. Years of wiping her children's feces from the walls of her home gave way to dealing with teens who shoplifted, got high with friends, ignored and swore at her for reasonable requests and in the end, just became too much for a single grandmother to continue handling alone after 22 years.

Barbara recounts her sleepless nights, discomfort with curious and critical neighbours, police and CAS workers, all the while trying to get everyone to realize these children weren't just badly raised kids they were mentally challenged, and as such, needed much greater understanding and different handling than what most services offer. This is no case of one size fits all, or what worked for one will work for another.

Throughout both books, the reader will feel the enormous love, mingled with desperation and worry that Barbara has for her four grandchildren. But her books are more than just memoirs of her experiences they offer solid advice on where and how to get help for children with FASD, along with a warning of the difficulties one faces in getting proper help.

While this is supposed to be a review of the second book, FASD, the Teen Years, it's essential that those seeking information on FASD read both Barbara's books. Just as she does in “Two Decades of Diapers", Barbara writes this second book in an easy to read, personal tone that makes you feel you are simply hearing her story while having a coffee with her. She doesn't preach or talk down to you she just pours out her heart. But what she has to share is invaluable knowledge in an up close an personal look at teenagers who end up suffering the consequences of alcohol consumption during pregnancy. Both Barbara's books will make those hoping to have children think twice about that night of drinking, or even that one glass of wine followed by intimacy when hoping to conceive.

That said, I'm sure Barbara's purpose in writing these books isn't to frighten but to enlighten. Barbara Studham wants to increase awareness of a subject, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, that demands much more intensive research than it has been given to date. Along with its predecessor, “ Two Decades of Diapers”, “FASD the Teen Years” should be required reading for all parents, parents to be and professionals because children matter.
Very informative on this very important and relatively 'taboo' topic. Thank you Barbara Studham. Your book provided a lot of answers for me. Unfortunately, we don't live in an area where this kind of open discussion would benefit anyone. Still much stigma and judgment and the children suffer terribly.
